DATEV Copilot 2026: What the AI Assistant in MyDATEV Can Do for Tax Firm Processes
DATEV Copilot has been available in MyDATEV since May 2026. What the AI assistant automates for tax firms and where its limits lie.
DATEV AI Workshop, capture mask, posting assistant: three tools, three purposes. What they deliver and where your own automation begins.

The DATEV AI Workshop is a free test environment where DATEV members can try out prototypes of generative AI: a summarizer for documents up to 1,000 pages, a prompt generator, and several assistants. It is explicitly not a receipt automation tool. Anyone who wants to move receipts through the firm faster needs to look elsewhere.
In conversations, three things that have little to do with each other technically are regularly lumped together: the AI Workshop, the capture mask in DATEV Business Online, and the recognition that pre-fills this mask. Keeping them apart saves you the search for a feature that never existed where you assumed it did.
Three tools, three purposes: the AI Workshop is a prototype environment for text work. The capture mask in DATEV Business Online is a configurable form. The DATEV posting assistant online is the recognition that pre-fills this form. For receipt throughput, only the third one counts.
The DATEV AI Workshop is a protected environment where DATEV members test prototypes of generative AI and give feedback on them. Use is free of charge; login runs through the DATEV account with SmartCard or SmartLogin. According to DATEV, five prototypes are available there:
DATEV gets specific on data protection: some prototypes use the Microsoft Azure OpenAI Services. According to DATEV, no personal data is stored permanently at Azure, and the processed data is not passed on to OpenAI. The DATEV Copilot is also still in the test phase within the AI Workshop. It combines text creation, document analysis, research, and voice input. The license is available free of charge through the DATEV Shop, though the integrated research feature requires LEXinform plus.
The common denominator of these tools: they help with writing, reading, and looking things up. None of them posts a receipt.
Strictly speaking, there is no such thing as an AI capture mask. The capture mask is a form in which you can configure which fields are displayed. It is pre-filled by the DATEV posting assistant online, the OCR invoice recognition. This is included in the scope of DATEV Business Online and active by default in DATEV Belege online.
What's interesting is how it works. According to DATEV help document 1071472 (checked on 16.04.2026), the posting assistant recognizes values "based on meaningful key terms on the digital receipt," such as the invoice amount, invoice number, and invoice date. It marks the recognized values in color: green for reliably recognized, orange for uncertain.
Here lies a pitfall that regularly causes trouble at accounting firms. If the checkbox Pre-fill uncertain values under Receipts, Configuration, Posting assistant is not activated, the values marked in orange are never even transferred into the receipt entry. The recognition worked, the result just doesn't arrive. If you get the impression that the recognition delivers nothing, check this setting first.
For a business partner to be recognized at all, at least one of these values must appear on the incoming invoice and be recognized: tax number, VAT ID, IBAN, email address, or postal address. According to DATEV, no business partner recognition takes place for the receipt category "Other." In addition, your own company details in DATEV master data online must be maintained before the first receipt is transferred.
DATEV itself states the limit unambiguously: "DATEV does not guarantee 100 percent recognition by DATEV posting assistant online." A visual check of all determined values is recommended.
More than many assume. DATEV has offered the Invoice Automation Service since 2021, according to its own statements; it generates posting suggestions including account coding. The figures from the DATEV press release from 2025 are clear:
DATEV also points out that structured data from an e-invoice allows "significantly better postings" to be suggested than from scanned paper. Anyone preparing for the e-invoicing mandate improves recognition quality as a side effect, too. The impression that DATEV has slept through the topic of AI cannot be sustained by these figures.
The four tools tackle different points. This breakdown helps with the choice:
For many accounting firms, the honest answer to the question in the headline is therefore: yes, that is enough. Anyone who wants to book faster does not need their own automation platform, just maintained master data, the right receipt category, and the correctly set setting.
All the tools mentioned kick in once the receipt is already in DATEV. The path to get there is not part of their remit, and that is exactly where most of the manual work happens in practice:
This is the point where a company's own automation pays off alongside DATEV, and only there. How such a connection looks technically and which DATEV data services exist is something we describe in the article Connecting n8n and DATEV. The upstream part, meaning receiving, reading, and checking incoming invoices, is covered in Processing invoices automatically.
Our experience from these projects: the hurdle is rarely the technology, but the access. DATEV's online interfaces are requested through the tax firm and activated per client. Anyone who does not clarify this in advance builds a workflow that has nowhere to dock. If you find yourself at this point, our services on Automation for tax advisors and on DATEV interface automation can help further.
Use of the DATEV AI Workshop is free of charge. A login via the DATEV account with SmartCard or SmartLogin is required. It is open to DATEV members who want to test prototypes and provide feedback.
DATEV states that some prototypes use the Microsoft Azure OpenAI Services, that no personal data is stored permanently at Azure, and that the data is not passed on to OpenAI. Since these are prototypes, the assessment for actual use in your firm remains your own decision. This article does not replace legal advice.
There are three common causes for this. The checkbox "Pre-fill uncertain values" is not activated, so values marked in orange are not transferred. Your own company details in DATEV master data online were only maintained after the first receipt. Or the receipt is in the receipt category "Other," where, according to DATEV, no business partner recognition takes place.
No. The AI Workshop's prototypes are designed for text work: summarizing, drafting, looking things up. Receipt processing runs through the posting assistant online and the Invoice Automation Service. These are separate tools with separate requirements.
When the manual work happens outside of DATEV. As long as it's only about booking faster within DATEV Business Online, the DATEV stack is generally sufficient and cheaper. As soon as receipts regularly come from external systems, approvals run by email, or clients need to be called after, that is a case for a company's own automation.
