DATEV Copilot 2026: What the AI Assistant in MyDATEV Can Do for Tax Firm Processes

Tax firms are working under deadline pressure and a shortage of skilled staff, while the flood of documents grows year after year. This is exactly where DATEV Copilot comes in: the AI assistant has been available directly in MyDATEV since May 2026 and is designed to shorten recurring writing and research tasks. This guide shows what DATEV Copilot actually automates today, where its limits lie, and for which firm processes it is worth using.

What Is DATEV Copilot and Since When Has It Been Available?

DATEV Copilot is an AI assistant that DATEV has been providing within MyDATEV since May 2026, and it is specifically tailored to work in tax firms. You order it as a free license in the DATEV Shop and then activate its use online in DATEV Rechteverwaltung (Source: DATEV).

The reach is considerable. As of June 30, 2026, DATEV eG counted, by its own figures, 40,176 members and over 1.01 million customers (DATEV press release, July 2026). Over the course of 2026, DATEV plans to gradually integrate Copilot into all cloud solutions via the header navigation, so it can be accessed centrally.

What Does DATEV Copilot Automate in Everyday Firm Work?

DATEV Copilot mainly takes over text and document work that previously had to be done by hand. The functions currently usable in production, at a glance:

  • Text creation: Emails, client communications, and internal documentation are created from a few bullet points instead of starting from scratch every time.
  • Document analysis: Text documents in PDF, DOCX, ODT, TXT, and RTF formats can be summarized and explored interactively up to a length of 1,000 pages, protected within the DATEV environment.
  • Voice input: The assistant automatically converts dictated content into text, which saves time on file notes and short instructions.
  • Translation: Copilot translates foreign-language documents into German before you process them further.
  • Extensions: Via DATEV LEXchat (paid), web search, and the service assistant, Copilot can be adapted to individual use cases.

Where Are the Limits of DATEV Copilot?

The limits of DATEV Copilot are specific and should be known before use, so that no false expectations arise.

  • No structured data: According to DATEV, the assistant currently cannot analyze BWAs, trial balances, or other tabular datasets. It is designed for continuous text, not numerical data.
  • Limited knowledge base: Without the paid web search or LEXchat, Copilot only draws on a knowledge base up to the end of September 2024. In this basic configuration, it does not know about current legislative changes.
  • Paid components: The basic license is free, but the full benefit with LEXchat or access to MyDATEV Kanzlei is not.
  • Assistant, not an autonomous agent: Copilot suggests and drafts, but it does not post entries or send anything on its own. Technical review and approval remain with you.

DATEV Copilot, AI Workshop, or Your Own AI Agent: What's the Difference?

DATEV Copilot is an assistant within the tool, not a process that runs by itself. The DATEV AI Workshop is the innovation program in which DATEV develops and tests new AI functions, while Copilot is the first broadly rolled-out result of it. A dedicated AI agent goes one step further: it takes over a defined workflow from start to finish, such as pre-sorting incoming client mail or creating recurring tasks. We explain the difference between an AI tool and a real agent in detail in our article AI Tool or AI Agent.

For firms, this means in practice: DATEV Copilot speeds up individual tasks within MyDATEV but does not replace end-to-end process automation. Anyone who wants to connect recurring workflows around their firm software and Microsoft 365 sensibly combines it with additional building blocks. We show how Microsoft Copilot can be integrated for this on our page Microsoft Copilot.

For Which Firm Processes Is It Worth Using?

DATEV Copilot pays off fastest where a lot of text with little technical depth is produced: standard client letters, summaries of long legal documents, and first drafts of internal notes. In our automation projects involving firm-related processes, we see the same lever at work: the biggest relief doesn't come from a spectacular feature, but from the fact that a recurring, tedious task consistently disappears. This lever is especially large for document processing and client communication, because both occur daily and rarely require creativity.

Before a broad rollout across the firm, a clearly scoped test run with a single process is recommended. This makes it possible to measure whether the time saved justifies the effort for access rights, training, and quality control, rather than just assuming it does.
