AI Funding for the Skilled Trades: What Grants Businesses Can Use in 2026

Trade businesses are eligible to apply for practically all digitalization funding programs, and the company size limits that trip up larger mid-sized firms rarely play a role in the trades. A business with 15 employees fits the SME definition of the BAFA just as well as the 100-employee limit of the AI funding MV or the 50-employee limit of the WTSH funding in Schleswig-Holstein. The real question is not whether funding is available, but which fund matches the project.

Where AI concretely saves time in the trades

The most effective use cases are rarely found in the workshop, but in the office. An AI phone assistant takes calls while the team is on site, and sorts appointment requests from emergencies. A document AI reads delivery notes and incoming invoices and assigns them to the correct site. And process automation follows up on quotes that would otherwise be forgotten: in many businesses this is the fastest measurable effect, because no order is lost anymore just because nobody followed up.

Which grants fit the trades?

• BAFA consulting grant: 50 to 80 percent for a digitalization or AI strategy consultation, depending on location, up to a maximum assessment basis of 3,500 euros. In the eastern German states that is up to 2,800 euros in grant funding per consultation, the guideline expires at the end of 2026.
• AI funding MV: for businesses in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern since June 2026, a 50 percent grant up to 50,000 euros for AI implementation including training, for up to 100 employees.
• State programs in the north: Schleswig-Holstein funds small businesses with 40 percent through the WTSH, Hamburg subsidizes consulting through the Digital Check with 50 percent, Bremen pays up to 17,000 euros even to micro businesses.
• INQA coaching: 80 percent for up to twelve consulting days, if digitalization changes work organization, for example when introducing digital site documentation.

Free but often overlooked: the Mittelstand-Digital Zentren

Anyone who first wants to see what AI can do for their own trade can use the Mittelstand-Digital Zentren: free initial consultations, workshops and demonstrators, including some specifically for the trades. The network is currently being restructured and some centers will end in 2026, but the offerings themselves will remain. No grant flows here, but it costs nothing except time.

How does a trade business realistically proceed?

From our experience with small businesses in northern Germany, this sequence works: first find the one process that eats up the most time, usually phone calls or receipts. Then check which funding pot fits the location, and submit the application before signing anything. Then start small, with one use case at a fixed price instead of a large project. An AI project that only pays off with a grant is the wrong project, the grant should speed up the payback, not rescue the idea.
