Agentic Commerce: Is Your Website Ready When AI Agents Shop for Customers?
Agentic Commerce means AI agents buy on behalf of your customers. What data and interfaces your website needs so an agent can complete a purchase with you.
Agentic Commerce: Is Your Website Ready When AI Agents Shop for Customers?
Until now, a human clicked through your website, compared offers, and made inquiries. Increasingly, software takes over that role: an AI agent that researches on a customer's behalf, weighs offers against each other, and, when in doubt, buys or books right away. For small and medium-sized businesses, this raises a new question: does this agent even find your company, and can it complete a purchase with you?
What Is Agentic Commerce?
Agentic Commerce refers to online purchases in which an AI agent handles the transaction entirely or in part itself: finding products, comparing prices, filling the shopping cart, and triggering payment, without a human operating the checkout. The topic was one of the major talking points at OMR 2026 and has long since moved beyond the idea stage.
The payment infrastructure for this is already in place. On September 16, 2025, Google introduced the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), an open standard that lets AI agents pay on a user's behalf, supported by more than 60 partners such as Mastercard, PayPal, and American Express. Mastercard had already announced its Agent Pay framework on April 29, 2025, and Visa introduced the Trusted Agent Protocol with a verified agent identity in September 2025.
Why Does This Also Affect SMEs, Not Just Large Shops?
Every company whose offering an agent needs to be able to capture by machine is affected, not just the classic online shop. An AI agent doesn't read glossy images or PDF brochures. It draws its decision from structured, machine-readable data. Anyone who doesn't provide that simply doesn't appear in the agent's selection, regardless of how good the offering is in substance. For a trades business, that means a bookable appointment request; for a wholesaler, the current price and availability list; for a service provider, the clearly described service with terms.
What an AI Agent Actually Needs on Your Website
An agent can only consider your offering if five basics are available in machine-readable form. These points are the practical core of the preparation:
- Machine-readable product and service data: Offers as structured data, not just as running text or images.
- Structured data according to Schema.org: Product, price, offer, and organization marked up so an agent reads meaning instead of layout.
- Current prices and availability: Outdated or missing price information causes the agent to skip you.
- A documented interface: A feed or an API through which offers and bookability can be reliably queried.
- A process without a media break: Inquiries, offers, or bookings must be completable digitally, not via a callback or a contact form that leads nowhere.
Is Agentic Commerce the Same as AEO?
No. AEO ensures that you are mentioned at all in the answers of AI systems; Agentic Commerce determines whether an agent can then also complete a purchase with you. The two go together but are not the same thing. We cover how you get cited in AI answers in our article on AEO for SMEs. If you want to get familiar with the basics first, you'll find the context in What Is an AI Agent. In short: AEO gets you onto the shortlist, Agentic Commerce gets you the sale.
Where You Should Start Today
The sensible first step isn't a big project but an honest stocktake: is your most important offering available as structured data, and can your core conversion, i.e. purchase, booking, or inquiry, be completed digitally without detours? In our projects, this is exactly where we start, rather than building an agent right away: first the data foundation and the interface, then the automation on top of it. Which tools are used depends on the case. How we then actually implement agents is shown under AI Agents. The decision about what an agent is allowed to do on your behalf always stays with you.
Frequently Asked Questions About Agentic Commerce
Do I need to act now as a mid-sized business? For now, it's still usually a human who decides, but the payment standards of major providers have been live since 2025. Anyone who structures their offer data cleanly now is prepared, without falling into a panic.
What's the difference between Agentic Commerce and a chatbot? A chatbot answers questions on your site. An agent in Agentic Commerce acts independently on the customer's behalf and can go all the way to completing the purchase.
Do I necessarily need an online shop for this? No. Bookable appointments, quote requests, or price lists are also relevant for an agent. What matters is the machine-readable, completable structure, not the shop software.
What is the AP2 protocol? AP2 is the open standard introduced by Google in September 2025 that lets AI agents pay on a user's behalf in a traceable and secured way, backed by more than 60 partners from the payments industry.
