UiPath is powerful but expensive. Why mid-sized companies are switching to Power Automate or n8n, what the switch saves, and what gets lost along the way.

Many mid-sized companies are asking themselves the same question in 2026: has UiPath become too expensive? As soon as the annual license bill for a handful of robots creeps into six figures, every single automation comes under pressure to justify itself. More and more companies are therefore considering switching to Power Automate or n8n. The cost advantage is real, but it comes at a price you should know before migrating.
UiPath is expensive because its pricing model is tied to individual robots, and each one costs several thousand euros per year. Depending on the configuration, an unattended robot costs roughly 8,000 to 15,000 US dollars per robot per year, while an attended robot costs around 1,500 to 3,000 US dollars per user per year (source: RPA pricing comparison, AIMultiple). Anyone running ten processes around the clock is quickly in six-figure territory before a single day of development work has even been paid for.
There's a second effect on top of that. Since UiPath rebuilt itself into an agentic AI platform in 2025, new AI building blocks have been added as separately licensed add-on modules. Analyst estimates suggest that such add-ons can increase the total cost of an RPA program by 20 to 40 percent when purchased individually. For the typical mid-sized company that only wants to automate a few stable processes, this means the tool grows into a depth it doesn't actually need.
Power Automate and n8n cover the common mid-market processes at a fraction of UiPath's cost. At Microsoft, the Power Automate Premium license costs, according to Microsoft, 15 US dollars per user per month and includes attended RPA, premium connectors, and process mining. Unattended automation runs through the Power Automate Process license at 150 US dollars per bot per month, or roughly 1,800 US dollars per year instead of several thousand (source: Microsoft Learn, Power Automate licensing).
n8n takes a different approach. The Community Edition is open source and, in the self-hosted variant, costs only the server infrastructure; the managed n8n Cloud starts at around 20 US dollars per month. Instead of paying per robot, you pay here for workflow executions, or nothing at all beyond your own server. When you switch away from UiPath, you mainly lose depth in surface-level automation and central control over large robot fleets. You should honestly weigh up these five points before migrating.
The switch is worthwhile above all where processes run through clean interfaces and the robot fleet is small. Anyone automating two to five interface-based workflows, such as invoice processing, data handoffs, or email distribution, is paying UiPath for reserves they never use. Anyone controlling dozens of old desktop applications without an interface and centrally monitoring a large robot fleet, on the other hand, should examine the switch very carefully, because that is exactly where UiPath's strengths, and what would be lost, lie.

For interface-based processes, often yes; for classic screen automation, usually no. n8n excels at API-driven workflows and integrations but lacks a mature foundation for controlling old desktop programs via image recognition. That is exactly where UiPath remains strong.
Especially then. Anyone automating only two to five processes is paying UiPath for orchestration and reserves they don't use. For small, stable automations, the cost advantage of switching is greatest and the loss of functionality is smallest.
Underestimating the rebuild effort. Existing UiPath workflows cannot be transferred automatically; every process has to be rebuilt and tested in the new tool. Anyone who only compares license costs and ignores this one-time effort is pricing the migration too cheaply.
