UiPath Academy: which certification for which role in mid-market
UiPath Academy offers free courses and certifications for Developer, Business Analyst and Solution Architect. What they really deliver for mid-market companies.
UiPath Academy is the free online learning platform from RPA provider UiPath and bundles courses, learning paths and certification exams around automation with UiPath Studio, Orchestrator and the AI building blocks of the platform. It targets different roles, from Automation Developer through Automation Business Analyst to Automation Solution Architect, each with its own learning plans and subsequent exams at the Associate and Professional levels. The former RPA Developer certification was already replaced in 2023 by today's Automation Developer certificates, but older credentials remain valid until October 2026 according to UiPath. For mid-market companies, the Academy is especially valuable as a free entry point, but a certificate alone does not replace project experience with their own, often historically grown processes. Status: August 2026.
What does UiPath Academy specifically offer?
UiPath Academy bundles free video courses, exercises in a sandbox environment and tailored learning plans that guide you step by step to prepare for a certification exam. On the Learning Plans overview, you'll find dedicated paths for roles such as Automation Developer, Automation Business Analyst, Automation Solution Architect and Automation Citizen Developer, as well as beginner formats for first contact with RPA. The courses themselves are free, only the actual certification exam is paid, administered by an external exam provider. For an SMB, this means concretely: employees can familiarize themselves risk-free and at their own pace before any investment in an exam is needed.Learning Plans
What certification levels are there currently?
Currently, UiPath distinguishes primarily between the Associate and Professional levels, each graduated by role. For developers, there is the Automation Developer Associate certification for entry into simple to medium automation projects, as well as the Automation Developer Professional certification for more complex topics such as advanced UI automation, Orchestrator triggers and AI-powered Computer Vision. On the functional side, there is in parallel the Automation Business Analyst Associate certification, which tests requirements gathering, process analysis and co-design of automations, as well as a Professional level for experienced Business Analysts with several years of practice. UiPath lists details on content and prerequisites on the certifications page. For the Automation Solution Architect role, there is also a separate training offering, but not in the same two-level Associate/Professional structure as for developers and analysts.
Which certificate fits which role in your company?
For IT staff or power users who build workflows in UiPath Studio themselves, the Automation Developer Associate certification is the appropriate entry point. For those in a business area who analyze processes and formulate requirements for automation without developing themselves, the Automation Business Analyst Associate certification is a better fit. The Professional levels are usually worthwhile only once several UiPath projects have already been implemented in-house and the role permanently involves automation, which in a typical mid-market company usually affects one or two people. For anyone who wants to just sample the offering initially, the free beginner courses without a subsequent exam are perfectly sufficient.
What does a UiPath certificate really deliver for mid-market?
A UiPath certificate is first and foremost proof of foundational knowledge, not evidence of practical experience with grown, often messy processes like those found in most mid-market companies. It helps with hiring or internal role allocation because it signals a standardized, externally verified competency level, but it does not replace knowledge of how an existing ERP interface, a grown Excel spreadsheet, or a special case in accounting actually works. Especially with first automation projects, it therefore makes more sense to combine certified foundational knowledge with external implementation support that properly documents the process beforehand, for example as part of process automation from NordFlux. This way, knowledge remains built internally without the first project becoming an expensive learning ground.
Frequently asked questions about UiPath Academy
Is UiPath Academy free?
Yes, the courses and learning plans on UiPath Academy are free to access, only the official certification exam itself is paid. You can view as many courses as you want and experiment in the practice environment before deciding to take an exam. For an initial overview in the company, this is usually more than sufficient.
How long is a UiPath certification valid?
Exact validity periods change with each certification generation. Currently, for example, older certificates acquired before the transition remain recognized through October 2026 according to UiPath. For current Automation Developer and Automation Business Analyst certifications, it's worth checking the current information on academy.uipath.com before registering for an exam, as validity periods and exam formats can change with new product versions.
Do I need a UiPath certificate to start using RPA in my company?
No, no certificate is necessary to get started with a first automation project. It usually makes more sense to start with proper process documentation and a clearly defined pilot project, and to build the certification later specifically for the person who will maintain the automations permanently.
Who should consider the Professional level?
Professional certifications are especially worthwhile for employees who have already implemented several UiPath projects and made automation a permanent part of their role, such as internal automation officers. For a single pilot project or occasional use, the Associate level is generally completely sufficient.
