Connect Shopify with n8n: Automate Orders, Inventory and Customer Emails
Shopify Node, Trigger and HTTP Request in combination: how to automate orders, products and customer emails between Shopify and n8n.

Shopify can be connected to n8n via two dedicated building blocks: the Shopify Trigger responds to events like new orders, while the Shopify Node itself covers the resources Orders and Products. For everything beyond that, such as more granular inventory queries, the generic HTTP Request Node steps in with the same access credentials. For authentication, n8n now recommends exclusively Access Tokens from a custom Shopify App, while the previously common combination of API Key and Password is considered obsolete. Status: August 2026.
Which n8n building blocks are available for Shopify?
For Shopify, three building blocks are available in n8n that complement rather than overlap each other.
- Shopify Node: covers the Orders resource (create, delete, retrieve individual or all, update) as well as the Products resource with the same operations. Node Documentation
- Shopify Trigger: starts a workflow as soon as a defined event occurs in Shopify, such as a new order. Trigger Documentation
- HTTP Request Node: accesses the Shopify Admin API directly with the same access credentials if an operation is missing in the Shopify Node.
There is no dedicated inventory resource in the Shopify Node. If you want to query or change inventory granularly, you use either product update or fall back to the HTTP Request Node.
How do you set up access credentials?
The recommended approach is via a custom Shopify App with Access Token instead of passwords. In the Shopify admin area, you create a custom app and assign it the required API scopes: for full functionality of the Shopify Node, n8n specifically mentions read_orders, write_orders, read_products and write_products. After installing the app, you copy the Admin API Access Token and the API Secret Key into the n8n credential. Alternatively, an OAuth2 approach via a Shopify Partner Account is possible, but the Redirect URL in the Partner Dashboard must point exactly to your n8n instance. According to n8n, the previously common API Key with Password approach is now obsolete, and Shopify no longer issues it for new apps. Credentials Documentation
When is the Trigger sufficient, when is it not?
The Shopify Trigger is sufficient for the standard case, such as automatically forwarding a new order to accounting, warehouse or customer email, but according to user reports, it reaches its limits in certain constellations. In discussions on the n8n forum, users repeatedly report that Trigger Events fail to appear even though orders are coming in through Shopify. The most common causes are incorrect or outdated destination configuration as well as a discrepancy between the Webhook API version stored in Shopify and the version expected by the workflow. Another recurring error is a 422 status with the message that the destination address is not allowed, which is usually due to an unreachable or non-HTTPS-delivered n8n Webhook URL. These are observations from practice, not an official error list, so the first step when events fail to appear is always to check the accessibility and HTTPS configuration of your own n8n instance.
How does Shopify fit into a larger automation workflow?
In practice, Shopify is rarely the only data source, but rather one building block alongside accounting, inventory management or customer communication. A Trigger Node for new orders combined with the HTTP Request Node for special cases and integration with the inventory management system or billing software forms the typical chain. For SMEs that already have Shopify in use and want to connect multiple systems with n8n, it's worth looking at the entire automation landscape rather than individual nodes. NordFlux supports the conception of such n8n workflows including self-hosting according to German data protection standards.
Frequently Asked Questions about Shopify and n8n
Do you need a Shopify Partner Account for the n8n integration?
No, for the standard approach via Access Tokens, a custom app created in your own Shopify admin area is sufficient. According to n8n documentation, a Partner Account is only required for the alternative OAuth2 approach, where an app is registered in the Partner Dashboard and a Redirect URL is configured.
Can n8n sync inventory directly?
Not via a dedicated Inventory resource, because the Shopify Node only offers Orders and Products as resources. Inventory changes run either through product update or, if that's not enough, through the HTTP Request Node directly against the Shopify Admin API.
What to do if the Shopify Trigger receives no events?
First check the accessibility and HTTPS configuration of your own n8n Webhook URL, which according to user reports on the n8n forum is the most common cause. Only then is it worth looking at the Shared Secret stored in Shopify and any discrepancy between the Webhook API version in use and the expected version.
Is the API Key with Password still an option?
No, according to n8n documentation, this approach is obsolete and is no longer issued by Shopify for new apps. For new integrations, only the Access Token approach via a custom app or the OAuth2 approach via a Partner Account remains.
