What the n8n Community Edition CANNOT Do + Free Features via Registration Key

The n8n Community Edition is the free, self-hosted version of the automation platform and, according to the official documentation, covers almost the entire feature set of n8n. At its core, only team and compliance features are missing, such as shared projects, single sign-on, Git-based version control, separate environments, and external secret stores, which are reserved for the paid Business and Enterprise plans. • Sharing workflows and credentials: In the Community Edition, only the instance owner and the person who created a workflow can see it. True sharing across multiple accounts is missing.
• Single sign-on (SAML, LDAP): Central login via the company identity provider is reserved for Business and Enterprise features.
• Git-based version control and environments: Anyone who wants to version workflows across staging and production environments needs Business or Enterprise.
• External secret stores and external storage for binary data: Connecting to vault solutions or external object storage is not part of the free version.
• Log streaming: Normal logging is included in the Community Edition, but forwarding it to external systems such as SIEM tools is not.
• Multi-main mode: The regular queue mode for scaling is freely available, but a redundant multi-main setup for high availability is not.

The free registration key: what it really unlocks

• Folders: Workflows can be organized into folders instead of just a flat list.
• Debug mode in the editor: Execution data from previous runs can be copied and pinned in the editor to reproduce errors in a targeted way.

Once activated, this key runs permanently and does not expire. n8n explicitly points out that the scope of unlocked features may change in the future, but already activated licenses are not affected by this.

Workflow history: a clarification that is often overlooked

It is worth taking a closer look here, because older posts and announcements from 2024 still listed the workflow history as part of the three features requiring registration. According to the current official documentation on workflow history, this is no longer correct: versions from the last 24 hours are available to all n8n users, even without registration and without a license key. It only becomes a paid feature beyond that: Cloud Pro users can look back up to five days, and the full, unlimited history is only available on Enterprise Cloud and Enterprise Self-hosted. Anyone who wants to name individual versions to protect them from automatic deletion also needs at least a Pro or Enterprise plan. In practice, this means: a rollback to the state from a few hours ago always works in the Community Edition, but looking back at the state from two weeks ago does not.

When switching to a paid plan is worth it

For a single team with one person who needs access to all workflows, the Community Edition is generally sufficient, especially with the free key activated for folders and debug mode. A paid plan becomes relevant as soon as several people need to work independently on workflows, connection to a company SSO is mandatory, workflows need to be versioned across staging and production, or seamless, multi-week traceability of all changes is required for audits.
